Dental Benefits- Tip of the Month

November 2011
Hello everyone, it has been some time since I have been on here, so let's try and address an insurance issue that is fast approaching. The end of the year is near and many of you have dental treatment that has not yet been completed. This is the best time to do so for a couple of reasons. First always remember that your dollar maximum is based on a one year limitation ending December 31, thus, if you have not used up all of your money allowed it will not be carried forward. Unused funds are lost and do not transfer to the following year. Therefore, if you need dental treatment you should get it done before the end of the year.
Secondly, this is also the best time of the year to have work completed that could be broke up into two calendar years. I have touched on this before and this is how it works. For example: if you require two crowns side by side; you would have the preparation for them completed in 2011 and one inserted in 2011 but the second one inserted in the beginning of 2012. The same applies with implants if you have implant coverage you could have the surgery procedure completed in one year and maximize the dollar limits and then have the crown done for the implant in the beginning of the following year, that way you are not out of pocket the entire amount as you maximized the dollar limit for two years. Please contact the office for further clarification on this topic.

Who loves candy?
I know I do. I love hard candy, gummies, chocolate, I love it all!
Halloween is over and you have all this left over candy in your house, it will be hard to resist your temptation!
You've been told time and time again that candy causes tooth decay, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the occasional treat. If you are going to indulge, there are some things you can do to limit the damage done to your teeth.

| Energy Granola Bar |
During a fast paced day many of us turn to cereal or energy bars as a quick snack to help push back or even replace a meal. Through marketing and often misleading packaging, these 'energy bars' lead us to believe that they are a healthy alternative. While some may be what they claim, others are not even made from foods at all, rather composed of synthetic derivatives from poor-quality sources. Here is some advice on what to look for as a warning sign to stay away or perhaps think of them as good for you as a candy bar.
Common Ingredients of Store Bought 'Energy Bars':
- High-fructose corn syrup: Added as an inexpensive sweetener.
- Soy isolate: Used to add texture and protein content.
- Whey protein: Used to increase protein content.
- Natural flavour: Can come from far too many sources.
- Fractioned palm oil: A cheap oil used for its high heat stability.
- Maltodextrine (corn): Genetically modified cheap sweetener.
- Artificial sweeteners (malitol, sucralose): Genetically modified sweeteners
Things to Look for in a more Nutritious 'Energy Bar':
- Natural protein source (nuts, seeds, quinoa, brown rice protein, hemp protein)
- Natural sweeteners (brown rice syrup, honey, maple syrup, stevia)
- An understandable, short ingredient list
- It doesn't double as a candy bar (containing 24 grams of sugar, which is the same amount found in chocolate bars!)
- As few processed ingredients as possible.
You can also make your own whole-food energy bars instead. Click here for this month's healthy recipe "Energy Granola Bars"
